Heading to Yellowstone

First stop after leaving Bend, and Mike : ( , was Shaniko, OR, a modern ghost town!

Here's Alan trying to strike up a conversation with the locals!

We crossed the Columbia at Biggs and followed it along on the Washington side until we came to our RV park on an island in the middle of the river.

We went to the Walla Walla area to a National Monument that tells the story of a distant relation of Alan's Mother.   Narcissa Prentiss Whitman, and her husband, Marcus Whitman, who were missionaries to the Cayuse Indians in 1836 - 1847.  Their mission and the small community around it, is where we visited.  A beautiful area with a lovely tribute to them and their faith.
Hard to imagine the bravery and fortitude of this young couple.  For over ten years, they lived, worked, and ministered to the Cayuse tribe.
In November of 1847, they were massacred along with 11 others when the Cayuse believed that Dr. Whitman had purposely let the Chief's wife die.  It was very moving to see how this story impacted the history of this part of Washington State.  We also went to see Whitman College in Walla Walla.

Next we went to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, for a night, but ended up staying three nights, as we had some mechanical trouble with the slides on the RV.  A lot of driving in and out of Spokane, WA for parts, but we got it fixed with the help of Dan, the RV repairman!
It did give us an opportunity to go on a sightseeing cruise on beautiful Lake Coeur d' Alene.  Overcast and cool, but such a lovely mountain lake. Happy Father's Day, Alan!

Then on to Montana!  A gorgeous state!
Our campsite in Garrison, MT
 Nice dining area!
10 PM mountain time...long, lovely evenings.

We spent a day in Deer Lodge, MT.  Once the home of the territorial prison.  So we took a tour.  But what interested my guy the most was the car museum.  Alan says, and he knows about these things! that it is one of the best car collections he has ever seen.  164 cars.  He was in car heaven!!
1932 Franklin ... made in Syracuse!
Two matching1955 Chevy Bel Air's ... a  convertible and a hardtop
A row of corvette's ... always a hit! 1st in line, a 1961.

There is also a really interesting history of the area in a museum across the street.

After Deer Lodge, we headed south toward a small town that other RV'ers told us not to miss.
Virginia City, MT was a mix of the very old restored to original and useful along with the newer.

 Virginia City, MT
That's us...taking up all the parking spaces!
The guy at the back table looks like trouble to me or maybe he's just looking for lunch!
Old stores, looking like they looked in 1800's.

Rocky Mountain sighting!
Getting close to Yellowstone Park!
That will be our next post!  Hope you enjoyed a little bit of
Washington, Idaho and Montana.
