Mt Rushmore, The Black Hills, and the Badlands of South Dakota.

After leaving Yellowstone we climbed the mountains of Wyoming and went into Cody to visit Buffalo Bill's Center of the West.  Fun to be caught up in this famous American's wild, wild west!

Buffalo Bill Center of the West
Bill gave Alan a very cordial greeting....he didn't shoot him.
This interesting museum not only tells the story of this fascinating frontiersman and showman;
it also chronicles the American west.
Found ourselves driving a long ways into no where and arriving at  Ten Sleep, Wyoming.
Population 26.
Had dinner at the Ten Sleep Saloon at the recommendation of the RV park owner.
Delicious food, fun people, and good beer.
Looking down Main Street
(Um, the ONLY paved street, the couple of side streets were dirt)
Leaving Ten Sleep we encountered a Cattle Drive down the middle of the road!  How we enjoyed watching these real life cowboys trying to herd the stubborn, nervous, bawling cows down the road. Best traffic holdup ever!

Holy Hills!!
Made it!
The Four Gentlemen

We stayed in Custer, SD and drove all over the Black Hills.  To Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, Hill City.
Like stepping into an old western.  Do any of us really get over wanting to be a cowboy or cowgirl??

'Wild Bill' Hickok was killed in Saloon #10 and buried here at the Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood.
His dear friend 'Calamity Jane' asked to be buried near Bill when she died.

Lead...can you see the mine opening?

Going to the Badlands, we stopped to see this museum honoring the Minuteman Missile program
that defended our country during the 60's and 70's.  Interesting and made us remember the 'old days'
of duck and cover drills at school.  Also made us think about the comprehensive programs, and the men who man them, that our country still uses to defend us.

Leaving the Badlands, we drove through the town of Wall to see the famous Wall Drug Store.
Definitely worth the stop!
We also went to Mt Rushmore once again and had the opportunity to hear the Air Force Concert Band during their  practice session for the 4th of July Concert.
Plus we had to see this wonderful sight once more.

Headed straight across South Dakota, and I mean straight!
We stopped to see the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
Guess who loves popcorn...
After staying overnight in Salem, SD we drove north to De Smet to see one of the Laura Ingalls Wilder homesteads.  It is great to see where this beloved author spent a part of her life and wrote
several of her novels about growing up here.

Our homeward journey continues into North Dakota and east into Minnesota.
Next blog chapter coming soon!
